Credit rating agencies play a critical role in capital markets, guiding the asset allocation of institutional investors as private capital moves freely around the world in search of the best trade-off between risk and return. However, they have also been strongly criticised for failing to spot the Asian crisis in the early 1990s, the Enron, WorldCom and Parmalat collapses in the early 2000s and finally for their ratings of subprime-related structured finance instruments and their role in the current financial crisis. This book is a guide to ratings, the ratings industry and the mechanics and economics of obtaining a rating. It sheds light on the role that the agencies play in the international financial markets. It avoids the sensationalist approach often associated with studies of rating scandals and the financial crisis, and instead provides an objective and critical analysis of the business of ratings. The book will be of practical use to any individual who has to deal with ratings and the ratings industry in their day-to-day job. Reviews "Rating agencies fulfil an important role in the capital markets, but given their power, they are frequently the object of criticism.  Some of it is justified but most of it portrays a lack of understanding of their business.  In their book The Rating Agencies and their Credit Ratings, Herwig and Patricia Langohr provide an excellent economic background to the role of rating agencies and also a thorough understanding of their business and the problems they face.  I recommend this book to all those who have an interest in this somewhat arcane but extremely important area." -Robin Monro-Davies, Former CEO, Fitch Ratings. In the best economic circumstances, effective credit management can be a challenge for many businesses; in tough times, it can become a critical operational factor that can threaten to make or break an otherwise healthy business. The Business Guide to Credit Management offers new insights into cash management, payment flows, debt collection and asset-based finance, providing practical advice and commentary for those charged with managing, coordinating and protecting their company`s finances.  It examines the credit management cycle from the perspectives of the suppliers, the customers and the banks, explaining the interrelationships between all three groups and offering best-practice models that can help to smooth the financial path, particularly when credit flows appear to be drying up.
An innovative approach to post-crash credit portfolio managementCredit portfolio managers traditionally rely on fundamental research for decisions on issuer selection and sector rotation. Quantitative researchers tend to use more mathematical techniques for pricing models and to quantify credit risk and relative value. The information found here bridges these two approaches. In an intuitive and readable style, this book illustrates how quantitative techniques can help address specific questions facing today`s credit managers and risk analysts. A targeted volume in the area of credit, this reliable resource contains some of the most recent and original research in this field, which addresses among other things important questions raised by the credit crisis of 2008-2009. Divided into two comprehensive parts, Quantitative Credit Portfolio Management offers essential insights into understanding the risks of corporate bonds—spread, liquidity, and Treasury yield curve risk—as well as managing corporate bond portfolios.Presents comprehensive coverage of everything from duration time spread and liquidity cost scores to capturing the credit spread premiumWritten by the number one ranked quantitative research group for four consecutive years by Institutional InvestorProvides practical answers to difficult question, including: What diversification guidelines should you adopt to protect portfolios from issuer-specific risk? Are you well-advised to sell securities downgraded below investment grade?Credit portfolio management continues to evolve, but with this book as your guide, you can gain a solid understanding of how to manage complex portfolios under dynamic events.
I'm thinking about signing up for a credit check monitoring system and have several options.?
For example I can go via Costco pay a little more and have all three monitored or go to a financial instituion pay several dollars less but only monitor one of the three credit agencies.
I guess it all depends on how important it is for me and 24 dollars or so more a year... Also - has anyone used Costco credit monitoring system? If so is it good?
Unless you're the victim of identity theft, any credit monitoring service is a complete waste of money!
You can monitor your own credit by spacing out your free credit reports from the three credit bureaus (one bureau every 4 months).
Go to AnnualCreditReport.com to get you free credit reports. It's the only site where you won't have to sign up for monitoring. You will have to pay for credit scores, if you want those.

But today, in a cruel twist, many Americans now regard their homes as a source of worry and dashed expectations. How did everything go haywire? And what can we do about it now? In The Rise and Fall of the U.S. Mortgage and Credit Markets, renowned finance expert James Barth offers a comprehensive examination of the mortgage meltdown. Together with a team of economists at the Milken Institute, he explores the shock waves that have rippled through the entire financial sector and the real economy. This authoritative volume explores what went wrong in every critical area, including securitization, loan origination practices, regulation and supervision, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, leverage and accounting practices, and of course, the rating agencies. The authors explain the steps the government has taken to address the crisis thus far, arguing that we have yet to address the larger issues. Offers a comprehensive examination of the mortgage market meltdown and its reverberations throughout the financial sector and the real economy Explores several important issues that policymakers must address in any future reshaping of financial market regulations Addresses how we can begin to move forward and prevent similar crises from shaking the foundations of our financial system The Rise and Fall of the U.S. Mortgage and Credit Markets analyzes the factors that should drive reform and explores the issues that policymakers must confront in any future reshaping of financial market regulations.
Are there any proven studies that show employers who check your credit discriminate towards minorities?
We're having a discussion in a black gay chat group and this question came up as a topic. There's at least two people that think so. One person says that there's even some proven statistics that suggests so.
This is not spam and not an attempt to get people to join the site. If you have an answer, you can respond here or if you care to read the blog and want to respond directly to the site, it's www.bgclive.com. Click on Forum, then scan down to Politics.
A credit check reveals how you handle your finances and if indeed the minority group has a higher "credit" delinquency in average than another group it will look like discrimination but is in fact just statistics based on a whole other criteria than "race".
Not everything has to do with a persons skin color. Especialy not financial habits... In financials we are always on our own and nobody is forced to do financial suicide because they have a different skin color.
To be honest... the world of credit cards is probably the last place to look for racial discrimination... information you put on a piece of paper when you apply for a credit card doesn't reveal your race... and I have yet to see a credit card application that asks what color your skin is.

Whether readers are overwhelmed by credit card debt or trying to prevent it altogether, this book has the answers. The author's basic three step program provides the information readers need to reduce interest rates, eliminate fees, and negotiate with credit card companies to keep their credit report clean.
Are credit card companies that charge a processing fee legit?
I never took one of these credit card offers I got over the phone or on the internet, but I was always curious about them. I received calls when I was 18 saying that I was approved for a credit card to help get me started building credit, but I had to pay a processing fee usually between 80-200 dollars, and after I paid a good faith estimate and used the card for a month or so it would be credited to my first statement.
I thought these sounded too risky so I always told them I wasn't interested, but I always wondered if these were scams or they just charged the fee because I had no credit yet and they were trying to see if I was willing to prepay the first 100-200 dollars.
I ended up getting a college student credit card from citibank and built up great credit in the last 3 years and have several low interest rate credit cards and charge cards that I find useful and pay on-time.
They may be legit, but I consider them to be toxic waste and fully approve of how you have handled the matter.

The subprime mortgage loan crisis in the US has developed into a broad credit and credit derivatives crisis lately. In previous years the credit derivatives market experienced growth rates of over 100% per year, outpacing all other derivative segments. This highlights the tremendous demand for credit derivatives, which is likely to remain high despite the current turmoil, but also shows how vulnerable markets have become with respect to this asset class. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding of the risks and mechanisms of the market is essential. Market participants who neglect this necessity face large downside risks, while those who have adequate and efficient risk management processes in place will be rewarded with an attractive risk return profile. This book aims at providing a reference guide to the credit and credit derivatives universe. It covers topics ranging from basic valuation principles for plain-vanilla products to insights into the latest development in sophisticated structured credit products. The authors explain in detail, but always with a hands-on practical perspective, all relevant instruments and quantitative valuation techniques. They show how these instruments can be integrated in a portfolio context and how efficient portfolio management is implemented. Moreover, the authors show how to develop and implement trading and investment strategies in the credit market.

Discrimination on the basis of credit score is not only legal, it is perfectly legitimate. Would you want to file out a credit application and had it to someone with a bad credit history? I doubt it.

In The State of Southern Illinois: An Illustrated History, Herbert K. Russell offers fresh interpretations of a number of important aspects of Southern Illinois history. Focusing on the area known as ?Egypt,? the region south of U.S. Route 50 from Salem south to Cairo, he begins his book with the earliest geologic formations and follows into the twenty-first century. The volume is richly illustrated with photographs and maps that highlight the informative and straightforward text.located in the region. He also identifies the roles coal mining, labor violence, gangsters, and the media played in establishing the area`s image. He concludes optimistically, unveiling a twenty-first century Southern Illinois filled with myriad attractions and opportunities for citizens and tourists alike. The State of Southern Illinois is the most accurate, all-encompassing volume of history on this unique area that often regards itself as a state within a state. It offers an entirely new perspective on race relations, provides insightful information on the cultural divide between north and south in Illinois, and pays tribute to an often neglected and misunderstood region of this multidimensional state, all against a stunning visual backdrop. Perhaps most notable is the author`s use of dozens of heretofore neglected sources to dispel the myth that Southern Illinois is merely an extension of Dixie. He corrects the popular impressions that slavery was introduced by early settlers from the South and that a majority of Southern Illinoisans wished to secede. Furthermore, he presents the first in-depth discussion of twelve pre?Civil War, free black communities

I have witnessed women who never carry any cash, and write checks for the following items: 1 can of soda, a pack of gum, a candy bar...etc. I once watched a woman try to put a personal check into the dollar bill slot on a vending machine!! Anytime I need to choose a checkout line at the store, I always pick the line with the least women, men never use checks....every woman on the planet is under the impression that "check writing is just as fast as cash"-they do not care if they are causing un neccessary delays. They never carry any cash....yet they are angry when stores set up cash only check-out lines. why do woman still refuse to carry any cash, or use a credit/debit cards in place of check writing? Why do woman not feel any embarrassement about holding up so many people in line?
Sorry to burst your bubble but I deal with the public as a clerk and they have to pay. From the men who come to our offices, 4 out of 10 don't have any money on them but want to pay either by cash or by ATM card .. the women that come always have money on them, it's the men who irritate me the most.
I am a woman and I prefer cash than a cheque. You were just coincidentally at the same time as those women paying with cheques.

"Agency without Actors? New Approaches to collective Action is rethinking a key issue in social theory and research: the question of agency. The history of sociological thought is deeply intertwined with the discourse of human agency as an effect of social relations. In most recent discussions the role of non-humans gains a substantial impact. Consequently the book asks: Are nonhumans active, do they have agency? And if so: how and in what different ways? The volume offers a critical state-of-the-art debate of internationally and nationally leading scholars within Sociology, Social Anthropology and STS on agency (Latour, Law, Michael, Rammert etc.). It fosters the productive exchange of empirical settings and theoretical views by outlining a wide range of novel accounts that link human and non-human agency. It tries to understand social-technical, political and environmental networks as different forms of agency that produce discrete and identifiable entities like humans, animals, technical artifacts. Italso asks how different types of (often conflicting) agency and agents actors are distinguished in practice, how they are maintained and how they interfere with each other"--
In the name of economic development, state and local governments in the US are now granting $50 billion a year in tax breaks and other subsidies to corporations in return for promises of more jobs and greater tax revenues. But LeRoy`s impassioned analysis shows that companies are not following through on their end of the deal; in fact, companies frequently downsize or outsource after getting subsidies, and promised revenue increases often prove false or exaggerated. LeRoy, founder of a group called Good Jobs First, presents case studies that show how job subsidies are going awry. He suggests ways that states and cities can make the system more transparent and effective and hold businesses more accountable. Annotation )2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Unlike many studies that have focused on issues of nurse attrition and dissatisfaction, the national Nurse Manager Engagement Project focused on what keeps nurse managers engaged and enthusiastic in their jobs. This book builds on key ideas of the study by including insights from the author`s conversations with several hundred nurse managers in the three years following the Nurse Manager Engagement Project. The model of engagement presented focuses on signature behaviors of emotional mastery and healthy organizational culture, and reveals principles that can be incorporated into nursing education, professional development, and recruitment. About 70 pages of appendices offer transcripts of four interviews with nursing leaders. Mackoff teaches nursing at Adelphi University. Annotation 2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
