Investment rewards risk. Why is the interest rate yield curve so flat? What explains the current environment?
We all know that investment rewards risk, and that the future is risky. Interest rates available to us retail investors are currently very flat over time. I get almost as high a rate in a current money market account as I would investing in a 3 year CD. We know the Sub-prime mortgage issue could ignite a credit crunch, and that foreign debt investors cannot be happy with the weakness of the U.S. dollar of late. Given current conditions why is the interest rate yield curve so flat, and why are interest rates on U.S. dollar accounts so low?
It seems to me that there is something going on in the financial markets that I just do not comprehend at this moment.
Does anyone have insights that might explain the current environment?
There is risk in the future, but the financial markets haven't decided the nature of the risk. Is it inflation? (If so the long term rates should be higher.) Is it deflation? (If so, who would want to loan money at high long term rates, when the rates are likely to go lower?)
Generally a flat or inverted yield curve has signaled an economic slowdown / recession.
What will the Fed do? Cut short term rates because they see a recession of the horizon or raise rates because they see inflation coming? Until the direction of the economy is clear to the financial markets, the curve will remain relatively flat.
"In much the same way that Good to Great uncovered hitherto hidden secrets of highly successful companies, Navarro’s Always a Winner uses extensive research to reveal the overriding importance of learning how to forecast and strategically manage the business cycle for competitive advantage. In doing so, this book provocatively explores a critical aspect of successful management virtually untappe...
Market players put their jobs on the line with every position they take. Any fixed income investor in the circumstance of being granted one wish would probably want to know what interest rates are going to do in the future. Economists and others have constructed models of interest rate behaviour, but no model works in all circumstances. The main aim of this book is to straddle the different worlds...
An innovative approach to post-crash credit portfolio managementCredit portfolio managers traditionally rely on fundamental research for decisions on issuer selection and sector rotation. Quantitative researchers tend to use more mathematical techniques for pricing models and to quantify credit risk and relative value. The information found here bridges these two approaches. In an intuitive and readable style, this book illustrates how quantitative techniques can help address specific questions facing today`s credit managers and risk analysts. A targeted volume in the area of credit, this reliable resource contains some of the most recent and original research in this field, which addresses among other things important questions raised by the credit crisis of 2008-2009. Divided into two comprehensive parts, Quantitative Credit Portfolio Management offers essential insights into understanding the risks of corporate bonds—spread, liquidity, and Treasury yield curve risk—as well as managing corporate bond portfolios.Presents comprehensive coverage of everything from duration time spread and liquidity cost scores to capturing the credit spread premiumWritten by the number one ranked quantitative research group for four consecutive years by Institutional InvestorProvides practical answers to difficult question, including: What diversification guidelines should you adopt to protect portfolios from issuer-specific risk? Are you well-advised to sell securities downgraded below investment grade?Credit portfolio management continues to evolve, but with this book as your guide, you can gain a solid understanding of how to manage complex portfolios under dynamic events.
The yield curve is the defining indicator of the global debt capital markets, and an understanding of it is vital to the smooth running of the economy as a whole. All participants in the market, be they issuers of capital, investors or banking intermediaries, will have a need to estimate, interpret and understand the yield curve. Fund managers that accurately predict the shape and direction of the curve will consistently outperform those that do not. This groundbreaking new book offers: An intuitive account of a very important technical subject, cutting through the mathematics to reveal key concepts Market approaches to enable fund managers to evaluate the current and expected shape of the yield curve An opportunity for market professionals to have an understanding of the latest analytical techniques. Written by an experienced market practitioner, this book is a clear and accessible account of an important financial topic.
In this book, the authors give an applied approach to relative value techniques, showing readers how to decide on the best place to put their money in order to get the best return.  They cover multiple asset classes – fixed income, commodities and equities although the main focus is fixed income.  They cover products that are rarely documented such as CMS floaters and structured interest and credit products. The initial part of the book will consider the main derivative products and their pricing interrelationships.  It argues that within any asset class there are mathematical relationships that tie together four key building blocks: cash products, forwards / futures, swaps and options.  The nature of these interrelationships means that there may be a variety of different ways in which a particular strategy can be expressed. The second part of the book will be focused primarily on relative value within a fixed income context and will look at strategies that build on the pricing relationships between products as well as those that focus on how to identify the optimal way to express a view on the movement of the yield curve. The third part of the book will take the main themes of relative value and show how they could be applied within other asset classes.

We need good preaching -- preaching that challenges us by God`s Word and brings the comfort that comes from God`s promises. Yet many of us rely solely on others to preach to us and are not benefitting from the kind of preaching that should be most consistent and personal -- preaching to ourselves. Note to Self is a practical introduction to this daily discipline. Pastor Joe Thorn delivers fifty brief, devotional chapters that model preaching the gospel to ourselves and its practical implications. Readerswill be challenged by the book`s direct, personal exhortations to apply the law and the gospel to their own lives. Part of the Re:Lit series. - Publisher.

What's the current best credit card to rack up airline miles?
I'm looking to get a credit card that has a low annual fee or no fee and a APR under 19%. My credit score is excellent. Are there any special promotions going on right now that offer a bonus on airline miles when signing up or anything like that. Thanks in advance!
Here is the best place to compare what type of credit card/rewards are best for you. I looked into the miles thing and its something bogus like every thousand or ten thousand miles is equal to a dollar towards any flight. The word 'miles' is quite deceptive.

laid off 7 months. $ 30.ooo credit card debit. what to do.?
Laid off 7 months. Haven't paid on my credit cards for 5 months, I believe I'll have to pay somebody sometime latter. My emergency cash is almost gone. I didn't think that bankruptcy was an option, but maybe it is. I have no assets to speak of. Live in Mich. Just received an offer from one of 3 credit companies, $1,500.00 to pay off $8,000 debit. I asked them to send the offer in the mail. I'm expecting my first "early retirement" pension check in ten days. That still leaves $22,000 in debit to two other companies. What to do. File for bankruptcy, in Michigan. Let the debit go to collection or to court. Pay the buy out. Right now I really don't care if I have any credit rating or not. It's credit that got me into this mess. No 401K. What to do??????????
Find a bankruptcy attorney and pay his fee with your first early retirement check and then get the 30K credit card debt wiped out with a chapter 7.
You don't have the money to waste it on paying back inflated credit card debt. Those "early retirement" checks need to last for a long time.
Make sure you have the essentials: A roof over your head, a car or truck that is paid off and works and a modest emergency fund to cover small monetary emergencies. (don't overdo it... and wait to build a real emergency fund until after the bankruptcy).
It is survival of the fittest.... and you need to think about yourself first.
Credit rating agencies play a critical role in capital markets, guiding the asset allocation of institutional investors as private capital moves freely around the world in search of the best trade-off between risk and return. However, they have also been strongly criticised for failing to spot the Asian crisis in the early 1990s, the Enron, WorldCom and Parmalat collapses in the early 2000s and finally for their ratings of subprime-related structured finance instruments and their role in the current financial crisis. This book is a guide to ratings, the ratings industry and the mechanics and economics of obtaining a rating. It sheds light on the role that the agencies play in the international financial markets. It avoids the sensationalist approach often associated with studies of rating scandals and the financial crisis, and instead provides an objective and critical analysis of the business of ratings. The book will be of practical use to any individual who has to deal with ratings and the ratings industry in their day-to-day job. Reviews "Rating agencies fulfil an important role in the capital markets, but given their power, they are frequently the object of criticism.  Some of it is justified but most of it portrays a lack of understanding of their business.  In their book The Rating Agencies and their Credit Ratings, Herwig and Patricia Langohr provide an excellent economic background to the role of rating agencies and also a thorough understanding of their business and the problems they face.  I recommend this book to all those who have an interest in this somewhat arcane but extremely important area." -Robin Monro-Davies, Former CEO, Fitch Ratings. "At a time of unprecedented public and political scrutiny of the effectiveness and indeed the basic business model of the Credit Rating industry, and heightened concerns regarding the transparency and accountability of the leading agen
In the last decade rating-based models have become very popular in credit risk management. These systems use the rating of a company as the decisive variable to evaluate the default risk of a bond or loan. The popularity is due to the straightforwardness of the approach, and to the upcoming new capital accord (Basel II), which allows banks to base their capital requirements on internal as well as external rating systems. Because of this, sophisticated credit risk models are being developed or demanded by banks to assess the risk of their credit portfolio better by recognizing the different underlying sources of risk. As a consequence, not only default probabilities for certain rating categories but also the probabilities of moving from one rating state to another are important issues in such models for risk management and pricing. It is widely accepted that rating migrations and default probabilities show significant variations through time due to macroeconomics conditions or the business cycle. These changes in migration behavior may have a substantial impact on the value-at-risk (VAR) of a credit portfolio or the prices of credit derivatives such as collateralized debt obligations (D+CDOs). In this book the authors develop a much more sophisticated analysis of migration behavior. Their contribution of more sophisticated techniques to measure and forecast changes in migration behavior as well as determining adequate estimators for transition matrices is a major contribution to rating based credit modeling.*Internal ratings-based systems are widely used in banks to calculate their value-at-risk (VAR) in order to determine their capital requirements for loan and bond portfolios under Basel II*One aspect of these ratings systems is credit migrations, addressed in a systematic and comprehensive way for the first time in this book*The book is based on in-depth work by Trueck and Rachev,
More than ever, banking competition is based on the ability to control the cost of risk and can be only be managed with excellent internal rating models and very advanced risk management processes. This book is a comprehensive guide to quantitative and qualitative rating assessments with up-to-date methodologies in the international banking system.
The mortgage meltdown: what went wrong and how do we fix it? Owning a home can bestow a sense of security and independence. But today, in a cruel twist, many Americans now regard their homes as a source of worry and dashed expectations. How did everything go haywire? And what can we do about it now? In The Rise and Fall of the U.S. Mortgage and Credit Markets, renowned finance expert James Barth offers a comprehensive examination of the mortgage meltdown. Together with a team of economists at the Milken Institute, he explores the shock waves that have rippled through the entire financial sector and the real economy. Deploying an incredibly detailed and extensive set of data, the book offers in-depth analysis of the mortgage meltdown and the resulting worldwide financial crisis. This authoritative volume explores what went wrong in every critical area, including securitization, loan origination practices, regulation and supervision, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, leverage and accounting practices, and of course, the rating agencies. The authors explain the steps the government has taken to address the crisis thus far, arguing that we have yet to address the larger issues. Offers a comprehensive examination of the mortgage market meltdown and its reverberations throughout the financial sector and the real economy Explores several important issues that policymakers must address in any future reshaping of financial market regulations Addresses how we can begin to move forward and prevent similar crises from shaking the foundations of our financial system The Rise and Fall of the U.S. Mortgage and Credit Markets analyzes the factors that should drive reform and explores the issues that policymakers must confront in any future reshaping of financial market regulations.

I am about $4,200 in debt on 4 cards all of which the interest rates are in the double digits between 16-28%. THIS SUCKS. the minimum payments are sky high and I'm feelin it. I've been seriously thinking about going to a debt counseling agency particularly Consumer Credit Counseling Service but have heard mixed reviews. I've been reading that I can handle this myself by paying off the highest interest card first, but does that mean abandoning the payments on the rest of the cards till I've finished paying off the highest interest card? That seems like it would hurt my FICO score which is fair right now, almost at 600. Would taking out a loan from my credit union be smater?
thanks and help!
Correction my credit is at about 650
lol i was just writing about this. I went with a counseling agency- Debt Counseling Corporation. My cousin- 2 months later- went with a consolidation loan from her bank. I am all done and my cousin is still paying--whats worse, she did not close out the credit cards and not only has the loan, but also has her credit card payments now. It really stinks.
I did a lot of research before i went with DCC--I recommend them to anyone--they helped me with budgeting and really gave me good advice. You could tell that they weren't in it just to get me on the program. I would check them out before you went with that other company. They gave me the best payment amount--i still got my statements and saw everything working!

Counseling Psychology, one of the original specialties recognized in the profession of psychology, centers on and promotes clients` personal strengths during times of developmental transition or personal challenge and crisis. This tradition has led the discipline to excellence in areas such as improving vocational decision making and understanding client response during counseling. More recently, this tradition has been applied in new and exciting areas, such as understanding the role of multicultural factors among persons and society, responding to crises in life such as health threats and disasters, and enhancement of social justice in systems and communities. The Oxford Handbook of Counseling Psychology comprises chapters, all written by expert contributors, in four sections: foundations of the specialty; contextual variables such as ethnicity and social class; applications across individual, couple, family and group populations; and intersections of the specialty with new targets of client or context. Each chapter reviews the history of research, theory and application; analyzes current directions, and sets an agenda for the close future, again in theory, research and application. The handbook is a comprehensive and well written survey of many of psychology`s domains of growing interest to students, professionals, and the public.

Consumer credit has become a topical issue for researchers, regulators and the banking industry in Europe as a result of increasing market integration, regulatory changes and a growing tendency of households to use debt to finance consumption. This study uses a cross-country approach to look at a broad range of issues related to consumer credit in Europe. Focusing on both the supply and demand sides, it takes into account the structure and performance of financial intermediaries, the socio-demographic and economic profile of households and their risk of over-indebtedness, as well as the regulatory framework, such as the new Consumer Credit Directive. In the light of this analysis, measures for the prevention and management of over-indebtedness are presented. This book is essential for postgraduate students and specialists in financial institutions, for regulators and policy-makers who are in charge of efficiency and stability of financial systems.
"This book is an investigation into the economic policy formulation and practice of neoliberalism in Britain from the 1950s through to the financial crisis and economic downturn that began in 2007-8. It demonstrates that influential economists, such as F.A. Hayek and Milton Friedman, authors at key British think tanks such as the Institute of Economic Affairs and the Centre for Policy Studies, and important political figures of the Thatcher and New Labour governments shared a similar conception of the consumer. For neoliberals, the idea that consumers were weak in the face of businesses and large corporations was almost offensive. Instead, consumers were imagined to be sovereign agents in the economy, whose consumption decisions played a central role in the construction of their human capital and in the enabling of their aspirations. Consumption, just like production, came to be viewed as an enterprising and entrepreneurial activity. Consequently, from the early 1980s until the present day, it was felt necessary that banks should have the freedom to meet the borrowing needs of consumers. Credit rationing would be a thing of the past. Just like businesses, consumers and households could use debt to expand their stock of personal assets. By utilizing the method of French philosopher Michel Foucault this book provides an original analysis of the policy ideas and political speeches of key figures in the New Right, in government and at the Bank of England. And it addresses the key question as to why policy-makers both in Britain and the United States did little or nothing to stem rising consumer and household indebtedness, instead always choosing to see increasing house prices and homeownership as a positive to be encouraged"--
In recent years, the interest in consumer-related issues has grown tremendously, fueled by growing unemployment, high foreclosure rates, credit card interest rate increases and a recession more sweeping than anything seen in more than a generation. Unfortunately, when readers look for a text to explain these issues, they are too often confronted with case books that have more application to law school curricula than to a college-level course. This book fills the need for a well-written text on consumer law and consumer protection. Covering topics as diverse as protecting a persons` credit rating to avoiding predatory lending, Consumer Law & Protection explains the law and gives readers the tools that they need to protect themselves from telemarketers, unscrupulous debt collectors and network marketing schemes, to name only a few of the topics covered in the book.
It is commonly imagined that in recent years the rampant growth of consumer credit has lured American consumers into a crippling state of indebtedness, a state that has upended old cultural values of Puritan thrift and stimulated a frenzy of consumption. Drawing on the sociological concept of ¿government` and informed by a historical perspective, Marron presents a much more complex and nuanced reality. From its early antecedents in nineteenth century salary lending and instalment selling, she shows how the emergence and growth of consumer credit in the United States have always been subject to shifting regimes of control and regulation.

This volume presents a variety of approaches to credit-bearing information literacy courses used from the community college to the university level. Many librarians still favor a course-integrated model, but one way to get the best results of either approach is to offer discipline specific courses, the features of which are described in this collection. Other subjects covered include the use of newer technologies like blogs or wikis or making use of video gaming and conferencing. The volume is edited by Hollister, an associate librarian at the University of Buffalo and an adjunct instructor in the Department of Library and Information Studies. No index has been provided.
