What do you think of Sony saying the PSN is down "indefinitely" and the stolen information?

FROM INTERNET SOURCES:

"Sony's PlayStation Network, plagued by problems for days, is being shut down indefinitely, according to the Wall Street Journal."

"With over 70 million user accounts compromised in the "illegal and unauthorized intrusion" of PSN, this is serious. Sophos's Graham Cluley explains that hackers potentially have access to your other online accounts, have a verified email address where they can directly contact you, and, of course, your PlayStation Network.

You're right to be worried with Sony explaining that the following information-- as well as your credit card data -- was swiped:

name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers"

I'm kinda pissed off about it.I got the email for sony about my account last night. When the network is back up I'd like at least $50.00 in credit for my trouble or i will continue to be pissed off about it. I need them to do something for me to make me feel better about it. I don't feel i deserve money cause the network is down. It's because they allowed my info to get hacked. I now need to get new cc num watch my credit report and change every password i have.

The Credit Market Handbook

The Credit Market Handbook

$173.08

The subprime mortgage loan crisis in the US has developed into a broad credit and credit derivatives crisis lately. In previous years the credit derivatives market experienced growth rates of over 100% per year, outpacing all other derivative segments. This highlights the tremendous demand for credit derivatives, which is likely to remain high despite the current turmoil, but also shows how vulnerable markets have become with respect to this asset class. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding of the risks and mechanisms of the market is essential. Market participants who neglect this necessity face large downside risks, while those who have adequate and efficient risk management processes in place will be rewarded with an attractive risk return profile. This book aims at providing a reference guide to the credit and credit derivatives universe. It covers topics ranging from basic valuation principles for plain-vanilla products to insights into the latest development in sophisticated structured credit products. The authors explain in detail, but always with a hands-on practical perspective, all relevant instruments and quantitative valuation techniques. They show how these instruments can be integrated in a portfolio context and how efficient portfolio management is implemented. Moreover, the authors show how to develop and implement trading and investment strategies in the credit market.

Can someone with less than one year work experience with $28,000/year income be approved for $168,000 home?

I was - with Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. They said my excellent credit helped 730 and because I was preapproved with MidAmerican Home Mortgage. Now, for the dilema. I signed a contract to buy a house for $168,000 and was approved for the loan pending my financial situation doesn't change (this was in Feb. 07) The house finished build date was about Oct. 07. I locked into a rate at 6.125 using 1% non-refundable down. I am not making enough money now to afford this place, so I told them I want to back out. THEY WON'T let me! The builder wants me to pay for the upgrades even though I notified them of my status before the upgrades were put into place. And, I can't get any of my 1% down back even though I can prove I cannot afford the place. HOW DOES A BANK EVEN APPROVE SOMEONE IN MY FINANCIAL SITUATION FOR 168,000 in the FIRST PLACE?
IS THIS LEGAL? Do I have legal recourse if they try to sue me for the upgrades or "breach of contract?"
-----Please HELP!

You signed a contract and put down a down payment, the only thing you can do now is sell it when it gets done. They should never have approved you for it but YOU should have known that you could not afford it also. In the end it is your responsibility to figure out how much you can afford.

Consumer Credit in Europe (Hardcover)

Consumer Credit in Europe (Hardcover)

$120.02

Consumer credit has become a topical issue for researchers, regulators and the banking industry in Europe as a result of increasing market integration, regulatory changes and a growing tendency of households to use debt to finance consumption. This study uses a cross-country approach to look at a broad range of issues related to consumer credit in Europe. Focusing on both the supply and demand sides, it takes into account the structure and performance of financial intermediaries, the socio-demographic and economic profile of households and their risk of over-indebtedness, as well as the regulatory framework, such as the new Consumer Credit Directive. In the light of this analysis, measures for the prevention and management of over-indebtedness are presented. This book is essential for postgraduate students and specialists in financial institutions, for regulators and policy-makers who are in charge of efficiency and stability of financial systems.

Counterparty Credit Risk The New Challen (Hardcover)

Counterparty Credit Risk The New Challen (Hardcover)

$56.33

The first decade of the 21st Century has been disastrous for financial institutions, derivatives and risk management. Counterparty credit risk has become the key element of financial risk management, highlighted by the bankruptcy of the investment bank Lehman Brothers and failure of other high profile institutions such as Bear Sterns, AIG, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The sudden realisation of extensive counterparty risks has severely compromised the health of global financial markets. Counterparty risk is now a key problem for all financial institutions. This book explains the emergence of counterparty risk during the recent credit crisis. The quantification of firm-wide credit exposure for trading desks and businesses is discussed alongside risk mitigation methods such as netting and collateral management (margining). Banks and other financial institutions have been recently developing their capabilities for pricing counterparty risk and these elements are considered in detail via a characterisation of credit value adjustment (CVA). The implications of an institution valuing their own default via debt value adjustment (DVA) are also considered at length. Hedging aspects, together with the associated instruments such as credit defaults swaps (CDSs) and contingent CDS (CCDS) are described in full. A key feature of the credit crisis has been the realisation of wrong-way risks illustrated by the failure of monoline insurance companies. Wrong-way counterparty risks are addressed in detail in relation to interest rate, foreign exchange, commodity and, in particular, credit derivative products. Portfolio counterparty risk is covered, together with the regulatory aspects as defined by the Basel II capital requirements. The management of counterparty risk within an institution is also discussed in detail. Finally, the design and benefits of central clearing, a recent development to attempt to control the rapid growth of counterparty risk, is cons

Rating Based Modeling of Credit Risk (Hardcover)

Rating Based Modeling of Credit Risk (Hardcover)

$68.56

In the last decade rating-based models have become very popular in credit risk management. These systems use the rating of a company as the decisive variable to evaluate the default risk of a bond or loan. The popularity is due to the straightforwardness of the approach, and to the upcoming new capital accord (Basel II), which allows banks to base their capital requirements on internal as well as external rating systems. Because of this, sophisticated credit risk models are being developed or demanded by banks to assess the risk of their credit portfolio better by recognizing the different underlying sources of risk. As a consequence, not only default probabilities for certain rating categories but also the probabilities of moving from one rating state to another are important issues in such models for risk management and pricing. It is widely accepted that rating migrations and default probabilities show significant variations through time due to macroeconomics conditions or the business cycle. These changes in migration behavior may have a substantial impact on the value-at-risk (VAR) of a credit portfolio or the prices of credit derivatives such as collateralized debt obligations (D+CDOs). In this book the authors develop a much more sophisticated analysis of migration behavior. Their contribution of more sophisticated techniques to measure and forecast changes in migration behavior as well as determining adequate estimators for transition matrices is a major contribution to rating based credit modeling.*Internal ratings-based systems are widely used in banks to calculate their value-at-risk (VAR) in order to determine their capital requirements for loan and bond portfolios under Basel II*One aspect of these ratings systems is credit migrations, addressed in a systematic and comprehensive way for the first time in this book*The book is based on in-depth work by Trueck and Rachev,

Credit Risk Modeling Using Excel and Vba (Hardcover)

Credit Risk Modeling Using Excel and Vba (Hardcover)

It is common to blame the inadequacy of credit risk models for the fact that the financial crisis has caught many market participants by surprise. On closer inspection, though, it often appears that market participants failed to understand or to use the models correctly. The recent events therefore do not invalidate traditional credit risk modeling as described in the first edition of the book. A second edition is timely, however, because the first dealt relatively briefly with instruments featuring prominently in the crisis (CDSs and CDOs). In addition to expanding the coverage of these instruments, the book will focus on modeling aspects which were of particular relevance in the financial crisis (e.g. estimation error) and demonstrate the usefulness of credit risk modelling through case studies. This book provides practitioners and students with an intuitive, hands-on introduction to modern credit risk modelling. Every chapter starts with an explanation of the methodology and then the authors take the reader step by step through the implementation of the methods in Excel and VBA. They focus specifically on risk management issues and cover default probability estimation (scoring, structural models, and transition matrices), correlation and portfolio analysis, validation, as well as credit default swaps and structured finance. Contents (updates and changes in bold) 1. Estimating Credit Scores with Logit Additional section on credit scoring in the mortgage market and its role in the development of the subprime crisis 2. The structural approach to Default Prediction and valuation Additional section showing how to implement a widely used alternative modelling approach (CreditGrades). New case study on the evolution of a banks default risk before default (Lehman) 3. Transition Matrices Explanation on the transition behaviour of structured finance ratings. 4. This is a written version of the Cattedra Galileiana lectures, presented in 2002 at the Scuola Normale in Pisa. The objective is to combine an orientation to credit-risk modeling (emphasizing the valuation of corporate debt and credit derivatives) with an introduction to the analytical tractability and richness of affine state processes. This is not a general survey of either topic, but rather is designed to introduce researchers with some background in mathematics to a useful set of modeling techniques and an interesting set of applications.

How many credit cards should you have to rebuild credit?

I am trying to rebuild my credit after ID theft, a couple of problems that were mine and years of basically not having any credit reported. (I primarily use my debit card and pay cash for everything). I make good money now and am trying to rebuild in order to purchase a condo in the next couple of years. My good accounts (rental, club, cable, cell, etc.) have not reported my good credit. So how many cards should I take out that will help boost my credit score but not hinder my credit. Thank you!

I would take out no more than 2. I would start out with a secured card. Granted you would have to put a deposit upfront to secure a line of credit, but the deposit would also garner interest while you're proving your creditworthiness. You could start out small, like $200-300 or larger like $1000-2000. Either way, I strongly suggest you to continue to use your debit card and pay cash like you've been doing, and make small purchases that you can pay off in full every month (around $20-50). I would only use the credit card in dire emergencies. After the secured card becomes unsecured, then you could receive offers for other cards, but chances are just the one card could work just as well. Be sure to dispute anything that was involved in the identity theft and make sure that you have a POLICE REPORT. Your "good accounts" (rental, club, cable, cell, etc.) CAN be reported through this reporting agency called PRBC. (http://prbc.com/default.php?) This is for REAL. You can have your good credit reported and complied in a scored report that can be considered with your traditional credit reports. It's become increasingly popular and I'm certain that it will help you out immensely.

Should consumers borrow in 2010?

Let's get some facts straight about our economy. It will cost the UK government 1.6 trillion pounds to pay off all our public debt and liabilities at a national level. Corporate borrowing is 2.5 trillion pounds which excludes the banks and personal debt: credit cards, overdrafts and mortgages are currently running at 1.8 trillion and rising. That's over £300,000 of debt for every family in Britain.
Where do I get my figures from? The Office of National Statistics when compiled for overall totals.
Scary isn't it and this time we don't have North Sea oil to bail us out.
Yes I know the media and the politicians are talking up the economy. That's their job! Your job is to safeguard your future as much as you can. Pay down your debts, avoid any new borrowing and try and build a financial cushion against future shocks because they're coming.
We can't keep printing money forever. Do you agree with this advice, what would you recommend?

Actually...if you do it correctly, you can keep borrowing forever.

Hopefully, you don't mind me butting in -- I am an American, but we have the same problem, so I hope I am not too terribly out of line.

In the big picture I am more-or-less on your side. I am financially conservative personally and professionally and I think my government should be too...but straight forward here is the debt, divide by the population, "this is what we owe" analysis misses some really important facts about different kinds of borrowing. In most respects, it is just plain wrong.

For example, do you think it is a bad idea for anyone to buy a house? Most people (in the US) do not. For generations, Americans have had one of the highest national home ownership rates in the world buy borrowing 200% to 300% of their annual income over 30 years to buy a home. For those people (like me) who did exactly what our parents and grandparents did, we have stable and affordable housing in difficult times as a direct result of massive borrowing (relative to income). (I am one of the 40% of US homeowners who owns my home outright, no mortgage now)

The use of debt for investment and income generating purposes is something that is entirely different than borrowing for consumption or wealth transfers. Such borrowing can go on for hundreds of years with comfort and ease. Massive companies like Walmart. Unilever, and Tesco have been doing it with billions for decades. Companies like Altria, GE, Royal Dutch Shell, British American Tobacco, & ATT have been doing it for 100 years or more.

Generation Debt

Generation Debt

$10.77

An emerging spokesperson for a new generation addresses the grim state of young people today--and tells us how we can, and must, save our future. The nature of youth is to question, SO when 24-year-old Kamenetz started out as a journalist, she began asking hard questions for which no one seemed to have good answers. Why were her friends thousands of dollars in credit-card debt? Why did so many jobs for people under thirty-five involve a plastic name badge, last only for the short-term, and not include benefits? With record deficits and threats to Social Security, what kind of future was shaping up for the nation`s kids? In this book, she talks to experts in economics, labor markets, the health-care industry, and education, and amasses a startling array of evidence that building a secure life is harder for young people today than it was thirty years ago.--From publisher description.

The Consumer, Credit and Debt (Hardcover)

The Consumer, Credit and Debt (Hardcover)

$115.21

"This book is an investigation into the economic policy formulation and practice of neoliberalism in Britain from the 1950s through to the financial crisis and economic downturn that began in 2007-8. It demonstrates that influential economists, such as F.A. Hayek and Milton Friedman, authors at key British think tanks such as the Institute of Economic Affairs and the Centre for Policy Studies, and important political figures of the Thatcher and New Labour governments shared a similar conception of the consumer. For neoliberals, the idea that consumers were weak in the face of businesses and large corporations was almost offensive. Instead, consumers were imagined to be sovereign agents in the economy, whose consumption decisions played a central role in the construction of their human capital and in the enabling of their aspirations. Consumption, just like production, came to be viewed as an enterprising and entrepreneurial activity. Consequently, from the early 1980s until the present day, it was felt necessary that banks should have the freedom to meet the borrowing needs of consumers. Credit rationing would be a thing of the past. Just like businesses, consumers and households could use debt to expand their stock of personal assets. By utilizing the method of French philosopher Michel Foucault this book provides an original analysis of the policy ideas and political speeches of key figures in the New Right, in government and at the Bank of England. And it addresses the key question as to why policy-makers both in Britain and the United States did little or nothing to stem rising consumer and household indebtedness, instead always choosing to see increasing house prices and homeownership as a positive to be encouraged"--

Terrorism Financing and State Responses

Terrorism Financing and State Responses

Financial and material resources are correctly perceived as the life blood of terrorist operations, and governments have determined that fighting the financial infrastructure of terrorist organizations is the key to their defeat. Since the attacks of September 11, 2001, a good deal has been learned about sources and mechanisms used to finance the “new” terrorism, which is religiously motivated and exponentially more deadly than previous generations of terrorist organizations. New policies have been devised to combat the threat and existing policies have been enacted with greater vigor than ever before. Five years into the battle against terrorist financing, it is time to take stock of the emerging literature on terrorist financing, cut through a number of myths that have developed around the issue, and assess the current policy debates.Through a series of thematic chapters and organizational and regional case studies—examining terrorist organizations such as Al Qaeda and Hezbollah, and regions such as East Africa, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and South East Asia—the authors provide a comprehensive assessment of the state of our knowledge about the nature of terrorism financing, and the evolution and effectiveness of terrorist strategies and government responses. This volume focuses on the preferences of major actors within terrorist networks and government agencies and the domestic and international contexts in which they make decisions and execute their strategies. It argues that both terrorism financing and government responses face problems of coordination, oversight, and information asymmetries that render them vulnerable to disruption.
